Vaulted and lantern roofs
Vaulted Roofs
A ‘vault’, like this one located in Bishops Stortford is an architectural term for an ‘arched form used to provide a space within a ceiling or roof’. When vaults are built underground, the surrounding earth gives all the resistance required. However, when the vault is built above ground, various replacements are required to supply the needed resistance.
Our Structural Calculations will ensure that any design issues are dealt with. One common issue is that without the ceiling joists tying the rafter feet and the walls together, the loads imposed by the rafters tend to push the walls outwards. There are several ways of overcoming this, including providing vertical support to the roof at the ridge, so that only vertical loads are transferred to the walls. It is also sometimes possible to provide a ring beam on top of the walls to resist the horizontal force.
Lantern Roofs
Lantern Roofs are the perfect finishing touch to any large conservatory. Formed by a second tier of windows to the main roof, Lanterns add height and presence to the overall construction and increase the feeling of interior space.
All design work is carried out in accordance with BS5268 (the structural use of timber) and the Structural Calculations we provide will be suitable for Building Regulation Approval.
